Question:

Paying for a fridge at the Stratosphere in Vegas if you have diabetes?

This last week my family stayed at the Stratosphere hotel in Vegas. My husband and I had checked in and wanted a fridge since it was promised in the hotel deal we had booked. We were told it would be a ten dollar fee a night because it wasn't "listed" on the deal in their computer.

After much debate we decided to pay it anyway.

When my mother checked in a day later and requested a fridge for her insulin, she was told that they had to charge her regardless. She was told that they had to charge for fridges even if it was for medical reasons.

Has anyone else heard of this? I'd like to write to the management but I wanted to see if anyone else had ever encountered this.

  1. Under ADA I bet if you had talk to a manager in the casino hotel, you would have not had to pay for a frig for the diabetes meds.  Write that letter and maybe they will help you out.

  2. My mother is wheelchair bound and when we stayed at MGM they did not have a disabled room available so we took a normal one and they provided her with a stool so that she could have a shower with no charge I am sure that they would have done the same with a fridge. I hate to say it but I think that the regardless of whether its right or not that a hotel like the Stratosphere cut their prices and their margins so tightly that they have to charge for anything they can (hence the unjustifiable resort charge). I have no doubt that things will change its no so long a ago that British Airways charged for wheelchairs !!

  3. I do feel that maybe they (The Stratosphere) nickel and dimed you for the fridge that you needed for medical purposes, and if you do in fact feel cheated, go ahead and write the management.

Although I haven't encountered this at all, being that my mother is diabetic and she travels with me most everywhere, especially Las Vegas.

    Here's a tip, though...

We never look for refrigerators in the first place, because she always carries one of those really small (lunchbox size) coolers with her, with her insulin surrounded by those freezer gel packs.  Her doctor and the TSA recommended she do this.  She checks fine through security every time, and they never question her.

Then, when we're at the hotel (and the freezer gel packs have subsequently melted), we just keep it on ice.

When we're ready to leave, the night before we leave the gel-packs "freezing" in ice for hours so they can be ready for the 3 hour flight back home.

  4. The people you talked to probably had their hands tied. Try to go further up the line and see what they could do for medical help.
