Paying twice for train tickets in Italy?

We bought tickets in Rome for round trip train trip to Pisa. On he way back from Pisa the conductor said we only had paid for 1 traveler but we had two tickets with different seat numbers, how is it we had to pay the conductor again or was this just a way of being robbed legally in Italy?"

Before getting on the train, did you stamp your tickets?  On any form of transportation here in Italy, whether it be the subway, bus, tram or train, there are yellow boxes either on (bus, tram) or before you enter (train and subway) that prints the date and time onto the ticket.  This validates your ticket.  If not validated, and a conducter comes by and checks your ticket, there could be a fine.

Did you ask the conductor that very question? He had to explain why you had two tickets with two seat numbers and he was claiming you had one. I do not get why you didn't ask the conductor. I had some situations on trains in Italy-like having a ticket for a train and when on the train being told that my ticket was for a different kind of train. They have a wide range of trains from Eurostar, etc. Some go faster, are newer, etc. Anyway, he too said I owed money, but there was no way until I was given a through understanding of what had happened, after which he let it pass. Communication is the key.

You should have had 4 tickets.  Two people and two travel segments.
