Paykan and Dynamo Moscow bounce back from shock defeats
The Iranian men’s volleyball club, Paykan Tehran and Russian side Dynamo Moscow recovered from the shock of early defeats in the first preliminary round of the Men's Club World Championship 2010. Paykan was defeated by Poland’s PGE Skr Belchatow in the first
round opener, while Dynamo Moscow suffered a set back against defending champions Trentino BetClic. However, both the teams made a great come-back in their next games and shook off their bad start.
Paykan was challenged by Egypt’s Al-Ahly in their second group A match on Friday, 17 December, 2010. Likewise, Dynamo Moscow met Paul Mitchell of USA in a group B game on the same day.
Paykan Tehran vs. Al-Ahly 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, and 25-19)
It was the second game for both these teams in group A of the Club World Championship. Paykan of Iran opened the game with some powerful serves. Mousavi Eraghi Seyed was especially impressive during the game. He produced some exquisite serves, and helped
his team get off to a quick start in the game. The head coach of the Egyptian team, Ibrahim Fakhreldin tried different strategies and urged his players to pay close attention to opponents’ movements in the court. However, Paykan continued to play aggressive
volleyball to secure the first set 25-20.
The Egyptian team relied on their setter, Shane Alexander in the following set. He was quick to float the ball in the air and caused the opponents a lot of trouble. The Egyptian hitters also took full advantage of the situation, and produced some commanding
cut-shots. In the meanwhile, Paykan turned defence into attack and once again troubled Al-Ahly. Paykan’s offensive was very strong, which allowed them to take the second set. Paykan Tehran closed the second set at 25-19.
The Egyptian squad responded strongly in the third set. They tried their best to disrupt the rhythm of the Paykan team, but the Iranian side were playing confidently after being two sets up. They were playing in great style, and picked up a lead of 8-4 at
the first technical timeout (FTT). They further stretched the gap to 10-5. With a couple of more point-scoring shots, they moved to 18-11. Finally Paykan sealed the set 25-19, to secure their first win at the Men’s Club World Championship 2010.
Dynamo Moscow vs. Paul Mitchell 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, and 25-23)
The Russian side were quick off the mark in the game. They had soon built a lead of 11-5, while Paul Mitchell of USA lagged behind. Dynamo Moscow head coach Yury Cherednik had formulated an excellent strategy for his team. Peter Veres actively played his
role in the game and hit some superb shots. Veres' frequent attacks created a lot of trouble for the American side. The U.S. team seemed uneasy in their first match of the Club World Championship. On the contrary, Dynamo Moscow’s players looked assured on
the court and did not allow the Americans to play their game. The first set ended in Dynamo Moscow’s favour (25-16).
The U.S. team was under pressure after a shaky performance in the first set. Dynamo Moscow was played even better in the second set, as their game plan worked perfectly. They were able to pull off an easy victory in the second set (25-14).
The third set was a do-or-die situation for American team. They attacked with purpose and fought well. However, luck was favouring the Russian side. Despite playing much better in third set, Paul Mitchell lost the set by two points. With the performance,
Dynamo Moscow registered their first victory at the Club World Championship 2010 in Doha, Qatar.
