Paypal won't let me link a bank account because I don't have a routing number (the number on the bottom of checks...that i don't have). Can anyone help me? Or is there some other way, without a credit card, that I could purchase items with Paypal?

Thanks!

  1. The ruting number comes from a checking account.  I am understanding that  you don't have a checking account.  How paypay normally works is that they give you a small deposit like a few cents  and forward to  your checking account to make sure that they have your right account.  Then you contact them to confirm the amount of the deposit so they know it is done.  Then  you have electronic check privileges.  You buy something and money is taken from your checking account to pay for it. You can transfer money to paypal to have money on hand (which gains some interest) and use it as  you see fit or leave it there.  You can have it transferred to  your bank account if  you no longer want it there.  If you want,  you can also pay by credit card and put in your credit card information.

I believe you have to have a checking account to set up paypal though.  Tat is easy enough - take $50 or more to your bank and open an account.  It will cost you for checks though.  Y ou can also order discounted checks from a number of companies that list in the Sunday newspaper magazines.  You then will have a routing number, which is the bank's number that identifies  your bank, and  your account number which identifies  your account.

You can buy things on ebay and pay by a money order which you can get at the post office.  If you have a bank account,  you can get a money order from them, usually at no fee.  They used to call those cashior's checks but now they call it a money order.

As to whether paypal will accept a charge card alone, I am not sure.  The only way I've ever seen to register with paypal is to set up  your checking account with them.  I you have funds, then getting a checking account is easy to do.  I helped my kids set up a checking account when they were in grade school.  Of course the fee then was 10 cents per check and it was a good way to help them learn that checks were money and they had to have money in the bank.  That happened when kids wanted something and I didn't have any money and they said, "Write a check."  There are fee free accounts out there if you look for them.  Some are age related, like some banks have a no fee for people 55 and over and free checks, too.  Most will charge for the checks, though you can get them from discounted places.  Many will give a small interest and some will give no interest but charge no fees.  Others will charge a fee if your balance goes under a certain figure.  Shop around.

Paypal is a very fast and easy way to pay for purchases on the internet and it means  you don't have to give your credit card to people whom  you don't know and who could take more from  your account than you want them to.

Another thing - when shopping on line, use a charge card rather than a debit card.  With a charge card you can dispute amounts and unauthorized amounts will be help and corrected.  With a debit card, it comes directly from  your checking account, and while they may eventually re-credit your account, until they do,  you are out the money and might not be able to pay other bills.  So don't rely just on a debit card as a charge card.

Good luck on your online purchases.  I sell scrapbook supplies on line.
