I'm 18 years old and just started a full time job, it's not my first job which is why i'm noticing some odd things/deductions on the payslip

i get paid £8.50 an hour, and make £1532.34 a,month

now, it says that my

P.A.Y.E. deduction is £215.80

and my National Insurance deduction is £118.73

leaving me with £1197.81

am i getting ripped off or is this normal ?

  1. It's correct.

    Go to

    www.listentotaxman.com

and put in the details - it's out by 5p but that's just rounding.

    Welcome to the real world!!!

  2. Hi, yes it sounds normal, it's just ridiculous how much tax and insurance we have to pay to the government just for other people to come into the country and gain from it. If you are not satisfied just get in touch with the tax office, and check your code, you also pay more if you are single.

  3. I earn almost £200 less than you per month and i pay less tax and NI than that, as you would expect.  Did u submit a P45 from your previous employer?  If not then you may be on an emergency tax code, if you still have your P45 then give it to your new employer.  If not then you can obtain a P46 from your employer and fill that in instead.  To be honest, i think your deductions look to be about right.  You should be able to check out the National Insurance and PAYE (pay as you earn) tables from the customs and excise website so you can see for yourself which bracket you fall into for deductions and give yourself some peace of mind :)

  4. That is perfectly normal.  My monthly deductions are over £1100...

  5. IUsual rubbish answers to a tax question Im afraid

f you started after 6 April, this tax is wrong as it looks as if you are on emergency code. You need to ask your employer for a form P46 which you sign to say this is your first job. They will then put you on 543L cumulative and refund the tax overpaid.

  6. looks ok to me, we all pay tax and national insurance.

  7. This just sounds like the comman joys of the tax man i'm afraid. Check your tax code firstly- if you feel you are paying too much then a quick call to the inland revenue will put your mind at rest. there numbers are all found online. Good luck xx
