I got a laptop and i haven't' used it in over a year, now that school is about to start i need to use it. However i cannot access the internet even though I'm using a linksys wireless router and my laptop detects it and says its excellent. But when i go on internet explorer says page cannot be displayed. Same as Firefox. My Lan Settings are automatic detect and my firewall is disabled. I plug a enternet cable into the router and still no internet. I go to Ip settings and press repair but i always get " Operation Failed: Renewing Ip address please contact administrator" That appears right after i press repair. I'm getting really mad that its not working my psp and Nintendo Wii both get internet i don't know what's happening.

Can an experienced computer user please tell me step by step what to do, or tell me what's happening and how i can fix it thanks. I don't have zone alarm and no firewall. I have windows Xp service pack 1 and can't update it because it have no internet access. Its a laptop and it says excellent signal in the bottom right conquer but when i repair in says i can't renew it the next second.

  1. When you have an internet connection/ a connection pickup eg it showing as excellent it says that you IP address and or you WEP key is incorrect.

Try going to Start>control panel>Network connections.

You connection should be in there. If its not its not set up correctly (see below)

If it is there right click and select Properties and then go to wireless network tab. Double click you connection in there and make sure your settings are as follows:

    Network authentication Open

    Data encryption WEP

Then type your WEP key EXACTLY as you have it caps lock on or off etc.

That should allow you to connect hopefully

If the settings are greyed out click in the box that says allow windows to configure my wireless network.

<>However if its not there read this

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...

Also you may need to contact linksys because the onlyproblemss ive solved here is if the PC cannotconnectt. However with yuo saying that your PSP or WII cannot get a connection its a bit odd. You may need to contact either lynsys or your network provider for your info on IP Gateway etc.

    Hope something here helps

  2. Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories> Command Prompt. A black window will come up.

Type in ipconfig and it will give you the IP settings. If there is no IP, type in "ipconfig -release" (no parentheses), and then "ipconfig -renew"

    Tell me how it goes.

  3. Connect your computer directly to modem. You should have access to internet. If not, check TCP/IP settings. Control panel -> Network connection -> Right click Local Area Connection -> Double click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) -> Check if Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are checked.
