i went to my gyno yesterday and was told i might have pcos.

so today i am supposed to be getting an ultrasound and blood work done to see whats going on.

she said most likely i do have pcos because i have almost all the symtoms. but shes going to double check to be sure.

she also said if i do have it shes going to give me metformin.

i was reading about metformin and it says some women can get pregnant and it also said some women may lose weight.

well i was wondering if anyone here has taken this medication before and what did it do for you?

  1. I'm on metformin now, I didnt notice any significant weight loss, but maybe thats because I havent really changed my eating habits, BUT do know that in the beginning while your body adjusts it has severe side effects, diarreah , upset tummy and eating carbs definitely makes the side effects worse, they do however subside after a few days . She will also suggest a low carb diet to help you because you may be insulin resistance as I am. I've been on metformin since jan and I will be starting clomid in a few days, so hope that works. Good luck to you!

  2. I lost a few pounds, nothing to get excited about. Most women don't lose significant weight unless they start dieting as well.

Be careful of the side effects of Met, they can be rough in the beginning. You should gradually build up your dose- I take 1500 mg and I started at 500mg for two weeks, then added another 500 for two weeks, and then the final dose. In most people it causes a lot of intestinal discomfort. I would recommend taking your first dose with dinner, so that you are home in case things take a bad turn for you. These symptoms do go away as your body gets used to it, so stick it out.

I was put on Clomid at the same time as Met, so I am not really sure what Met is or isn't doing for me. Maybe it's helping the Clomid, maybe not. I did three Clomid rounds and they didn't work, so i am starting injectables soon. My doctor has said that when I do get pg, I will stay on the Met through first trimester, because it reduced the chance of miscarriage, which for PCOS'ers is high.

    Good luck
