Question:

Peach tree watering during harvest season?

I have been looking all over the internet for an answer and can't seem to find one! I have an old well-established peach tree that is now bearing lots of fruit.

Should it be watered at all right now? And if so, how much? I am in the Sacramento, CA area and it is going to be around 100 degrees every day this week.

I appreciate any help!

  1. They need water just like before.  Maybe more than before since temp. is so high.  They are shallow-rooted plants, so they do need regular irrigation.  Water the ground around the trunk, not the leaves/fruit.

If you give any fertilizer at all-now I am throwing in a bonus for you- give more P and K, especially K, with little N at this stage to help it produce fruit.

  2. Yes water it that tree is working over time to make you wonderful fruit..

I never stopped watering ours.  I live in NC water the ground not the leaves or the fruits.  about 4/5 gallons a day  my peaches were yummy this year ! but they are all gone now lucky you

  3. Read under "moisture levels" here on this link..You should not overwater peach trees and they like to dry out inbetween watering..too much water when they are fruiting will not allow all of the natural sugars to develop properly and your peaches will not be sweet..just juicy or even possibly split in places from overwatering
