Question:

Peaches refuses to go outside!

We adopted Peaches from the SCPA about 4 days ago. From the start, she refuses to go outside. I literally have to carry her outside. Once outside, she would take care of business and run to the door to get inside. I have not been able to walk her, because she will not go. Treats are not working. The minute she knows that I want her to go outside with me, she runs back to her bed. I don't know if I am being mean by forcing her to go outside. Besides that she weights about 40 lbs. Is there anything any one can suggest to help Peaches over come her fear of the out door? Thank you!

  1. A forty lb dog really needs exercise. If possible to have someone to help you with this one, Take her in the car a few blocks away from your home and it will force her to walk home maybe faster than you might want. Even if you only go a block away.

I suggest this because if you leave from your home you may have to drag her for a walk.

Also you might check at the wal-mart for a harness or a head leash, I cant remember the correct name but you attach it to her head and it helps keep control of her, Both will make it easier for you to handle her.

She may be afraid of the unknown, She will adjust. Give her some time, Don't forget to praise her when ever she does what you want her to do.

I would also suggest you take her to a secluded place like the park. For walks if you can.

The Nose Loop - Dogs are naturally "pack" animals with a highly structured social order. One of the ways the "pack leader" will demonstrate his position is to gently but firmly grasp a subordinate's muzzle in his mouth. This is a non-aggressive, very clear signal regarding who's the boss! The Gentle Leader's® nose loop encircles your dog's muzzle in this same manner, letting him know in his own language that you are his leader. Dogs feel more secure when they know who the leader is.

Here are examples of what I was telling you. It is not a muzzle.

  2. Poor Peaches must have been traumatized at some point about going outdoors.  I think if you are patient with her she will get over it, but it may take awhile.  If you carry her out -she sounds really heavy- and she has a positive experience outside, like getting food, it will help her know that outside is a good place and she won't get hurt or be abandoned again.  Since it has only been 4 days she is probably still getting used to you and your house.   Good luck.
