One of the finest players of his generation, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Beckham, was expected to have his last hurray on the International stage, with many backing him to play in this summer’s Olympic games.
Having signed up as an ambassador in 2005, he played a crucial role in London securing the hosting rights, as his popularity was one of the main reasons Paris’ bid was rejected.
Currently plying his trade in the MLS, Beckham has created some footballing headlines despite his ageing limbs and can still ping a cross or two like his golden days.
Great Britain is also set to take part in the men’s football competition and according to the rules, three over-age players are allowed in the 18-man squad. Manchester United’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ryan-Giggs-c31985 was a heavy favourite to be named but Beckham remained the choice
of the public, who were dying to see him perform, right in his own backyard.
While he made the cut for the preliminary team, Stuart Pearce has announced that he will not play any part on the field this summer, something which has caused a lot of hue and cry especially on the internet.
Although many have urged Pearce to reconsider, Peter Shilton for one, claims that the tactician made the correct decision, as the winger will not be able to play consecutive games because of his age.
"He's been a fantastic player over the years, certainly when he was at his peak, but he's nowhere near the player he was. I've not been watching David play in the States but it's a different level of football over there. David might play the first game well,
but then the second game becomes a bit harder.”
"Stuart Pearce wants to do well and win the tournament. To do that you must win so many games in so many days and the older you get the less you can do that,” the former shot-stopper was quoted as saying.
After omitting Beckham, Pearce has opted for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Craig-Bellamy-c9471 and Ryan Giggs as the three overage players, although his decision has been criticized by almost all sections of the media and public.
