Pebble Beach Golf Course: Kids' mischief turns costly
The Monterey County Sheriff’s department cited five juveniles, who were alleged to have stolen and caused damage to the Pebble Beach Golf Course at Pebble Beach, California.
At around six on Thursday night, the deputy said that he received a call that some youngsters were causing damage to the greens and stealing things from the course.
When investigation into the matter started, the deputies found evidence that led them to the back yard of one of the accused kids.
When they reached the back yard they found all five kinds responsible for the damage and hence they were cited and not arrested.
The Pebble Beach Golf Course was opened in 1919 and was designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant.
After it was inaugurated, the course hosted its first professional tournament, the Monterey Peninsula Open. The tournament took place on its fairways in 1926.
It hosted its first major championship tournament in 1972. Jack Nicklaus, former professional golfer from America, won the tournament with a margin of three strokes.
Five years later, the PGA Championship came to the fairways of the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Lanny Wadkins went on to win the tournament after a tough showdown in playoff and received the
winner’s check of $45,000.
After its first U.S Open, the Pebble Beach Golf Course became a home for the major championship tournament.
Since then, it has held five major championship tournaments, all of them being the U.S. Open.
The last major championship conducted on the windy course was in 2010, which was won by the Northern Irish professional golfer, Graeme McDowell.
There have been many controversies surrounding the golf course. The environmentalists have protested time and again that the location of the course has affected the natural habitat of wild
life.
There have been numerous projects to expand the course and give it more personality , but the idea has been objected by the environmentalists.
Environmentalists maintained that variety of species of wild life in the area are endangered and have already suffered because of the course.
A strict check should be kept on the course because the damages caused by some misfits costs big money.
