Peddlers Cross unable to make a winning comeback
Peddlers Cross failed to make a winning comeback in the Jumpers’ Bumper National Hunt Flat Race at Kempton in England on Friday, January 25, 2013. He had last raced in March 2012 and seemed to be a touch rusty in the race.
The seasoned runner was given the highest odds for victory, despite the fact that there was a question mark over his form and fitness. He was given a general starting price of 5 to 4 and was an ideal choice for the punters.
However, things did not work out well in his favour and he had to settle for the runner up position in the end. He started off a touch slowly and did not push hard until things started getting away from him.
Oscar’s son made a valiant effort towards the final few moments, but did not have the speed to challenge the winner, Sam Winner, who earned the top spot comfortably by a couple of lengths.
Although Peddlers Cross was unable to succeed in the race, his team was not disappointed by his performance. His fans would have been a touch disappointed though, as they would have wanted to see him secure the top spot at Kempton.
According to Donald McCain, trainer of the Irish challenger, “That was grand as he was cantering all over them in the straight but just took a blow and I told Jason [Maguire] not to be too hard on him. I don't know where we will go now but he wants decent
ground wherever we go.”
Earlier, McCain had said that Peddlers Cross will be sent into racing at Cheltenham. He did not say a word about it this time around though.
Back then, the trainer had claimed, “There are no firm plans as to which race he will go for at Cheltenham - I'd like to be clearer in my mind about that but the weather has meant that we are a bit behind schedule on that front. Either way, Cheltenham in
March is what he is being trained for, whichever race he ends up in.”
Peddlers Cross has managed to win a total of nine races in his career and his fans will be hoping that he adds more victories to that tally in the upcoming events.
