  1. Do some research local hospitals and perhaps volunteer

  2. To be any kind of a RN you need to either obtain an Associate's Degree, a Bachelor's Degree, or find a rare hospital taught diploma RN program. Any of the three make you eligible to take your RN licensure exam in your state.

In nursing school they train you in a variety of settings, including clinical rotations and courses in pediatrics. But most of your education will be provided by your employer when you are hired.

New graduate RNs will earn about $25-$30 per hour working in a hospital environment depending on what part of the country you live in. You don't get paid more or less depending on what specialty area you work in (peds, adult med/surg, psych, OR, ER, etc.), pay differences are based upon years of experience in most cases.

Schedule varies depending on the hospital. You find a job that has a schedule you want to work and apply for it. Most places have either 8 or 12 hour shifts. You would work every other weekend if you work 8 hours or every third weekend for 12 hours in most hospitals, and you would also have to put in a couple of holidays per year. There are usually three shifts that run from around 7am-3pm, 3pm-11pm, and 11pm-7am. Working straight night shifts always pays substantially more (up to $5 per hour or more differential).
