Pedro Correia and Yoackim Guichard claim victory in Round 1 at Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro
Portugal’s Pedro Correia and Norway’s Yoackim Guichard made it through into the second round (Round of 96) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro after emerging triumphant in their respective Round 1 (Round
of 112) heats that went down at the main event site of Playa de Pantin in Galicia, Spain, on Wednesday, September 12.
While Correia finished in first place during the third heat, France’s Roland Lefeuvre finished behind him in second place, thus accompanying the winner into the next round. Norway’s Luca Guichard finished in third place, while Spain’s Roberto Alvarez Junq
found himself sitting in fourth place at the end of the heat. Both the surfers were sent packing as a result of their bottom-two finish.
The fourth heat saw Venezuela’s Denny Mendoza accompany Guichard into the next round after securing runner-up place, whereas both America’s Greg Urata and Sweden’s Timothy Latte were forced to make a premature exit from the competition after rounding out
the third and fourth positions respectively.
With demanding two-to-three foot waves breaking at the primary event site on the opening day of the competition, the up-and-coming surfers had their work cut out. Scores were not easy to come by, thus pushing the exciting athletes on their back-foot.
Correia squared-off with Lefeuvre, Guichard and Junq in the third heat. The conditions put the perseverance and skills of surfers to test. The Portuguese surfer did well to eventually had to make the most of whatever was on offer and eventually managed to
get to a heat-total of 11.30 points, which included a couple of scores in the five-point range.
Lefeuvre made the Round 2 cut as well after scoring a 5.43 and 4.43 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 9.86 points.
Guichard and Junq finished with a heat-total of 9.30 and 3.77 points respectively, thus getting eliminated from the competition.
The fourth heat saw Guichard walk away with a win after scoring a 4.83 and 5.50 off his best-two waves for a heat-total of 10.33 points.
Mendoza was successful in extending his life in the event as well despite a pretty ordinary performance, which featured a 2.50 and 3.83 off his best-two waves.
Urata finished in third place with a heat-total of 4.87 points, while Latte finished in fourth place after registering a heat-total of 4.76 points. Both the surfers found themselves removed from the contention for the event title as a result.
