Pedro Sousa duels past Joao Souza in 2nd round – Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011
Portuguese Pedro Sousa battled past second seeded Brazilian Joao Souza in the second round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
The two players took up the swords against each other at the classic clay courts of the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador. After one hour and thirty nine minutes the Portuguese qualifier flabbergasted the second seeded Brazilian by bouncing back from a set down to score 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 on Wednesday the 23rd of November 2011.
Commencing the first round of the match was the unseeded Portuguese player who had just won the toss and both the players managed to hold their respective serves. However, it was in the third round that Sousa had double faulted on his serve.
On the contrary, the second seeded Brazilian player had capitalized on the breakpoint and then held his respective serve to clog two consecutive games and take a mini lead on the scoreboard. Subsequently, in the following three games the players matched a blow for a blow and they bagged their respective serves.
In the following two games the players traded in breaks and the score had progressed to 5-4 with the second seed leading the set. As he held his serve for the last time, he smashed a stunning backhand winner to go one up in the match with a 6-4 victory.
After taking a beating in the first round the Portuguese player pulled of his socks and took a notch higher in his performance. Inaugurating the second round was once again the Portuguese player and this time he reeled off three successive games by capitalizing on a breakpoint in the second game to take a mini lead on the scoreboard.
It was in the fourth game that the second seeded Brazilian made a return with a hold of serve and then broke his adversary in the following game to reduce the deficit to 2-3 by the end of the fifth game.
However, Sousa also broke back immediately in the next game and the score had shifted to 4-2 at the end of the sixth game. As Sousa held his serve for the last time, he smashed a marvellous forehand winner and then broke his adversary for the last time to secure the set.
The decisive round of the match was a lopsided victory for the Portuguese player as he bagged six out of the seven games played and he did not setup a single breakpoint opportunity for his adversary.
Moreover, he sealed his victory by accomplishing almost twice as many total points in the decisive set. Next up for the Portuguese qualifier is Pablo Galdon in the quarterfinal of the tournament.
