Pedro Sousa duels past Pablo Galdon in quarterfinal – Ciudad de Guayaquil CH 2011
Portuguese qualifier Pedro Sousa drilled past Argentinean Pablo Galdon in the quarterfinal of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
At the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador the players took up the brawl on clay courts and it took the Portuguese qualifier two hours and nine minutes to get the best of Argentinean Galdon by defeating him three sets of 0-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) on Thursday
the 24th of November 2011.
The first set of the match was initiated by Galdon after he had won the service pitch and he successfully held his first serve to open the scoreboard to 1-0. Galdon not only capitalized on all his respective serves but also on his opponent’s serve to clog
the opening round with a bagel set victory.
After being put to shame in the opening round Sousa made a fantastic return as he took on an assertive style of play and flabbergasted his opponent by bagging the second set. Nonetheless, the second set was also commenced by Galdon but this time he double
faulted on his first serve to gift away the opening game.
On the contrary, Sousa benefitted from the game and then held his respective serve to reel off two successive games and took the mini lead on the scoreboard. However, Galdon made a return by reducing the deficit to nothing and by the end of the fourth game
the score had equalized at two games each.
From there onwards the players matched a blow for a blow and neither of the players wanted the other to take the lead. The score kept tied at the end of the sixth game, then at four games and finally at five games each by the end of the tenth game.
It was a lucky day for Sousa as he capitalized on an extremely vital breakpoint and then served for the set in the twelfth game. As he served, he smashed a marvellous backhand winner down the T to secure the second set.
At the end of the first two sets, both the players had bagged a set each and opening the decisive round was again Galdon, who held his serve to open the scoreboard t 1-0. In the following two games the players traded in breaks and by the end of the third
game, Galdon was leading the set with a break.
However, Sousa equalized the score at two games each by the end of the fourth game with a hold of serve. The score again tied at the end of the sixth game as both the players once more bagged a game each.
As the players held their service games and then traded in breaks the score tied at five games each and finally the set was pushed into a tiebreaker at the end of the twelfth game. During the tiebreaker, Sousa was first to take the lead and he ran past his
adversary to reach the finish line and clinched the tiebreaker at 7-4 to reserve a spot in the semi final of the event.
