Pedro Sousa thrashes Juan Sebastian Gomez in 1st round – Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011
Portuguese qualifier Pedro Sousa surmounted Columbian lucky loser Juan Sebastian Gomez in the first round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
On Tuesday the 22nd of November 2011 both the old fangled opponents clashed against each other on outdoor clay courts of the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It took the Portuguese qualifier one hour and fifteen minutes to send the Columbian lucky loser to the lockers by flogging him in straight sets of 7-5, 6-2.
During the first round of the match, both the players were extremely competitive, in-fact both the players matched a blow for a blow. Although, the first round of the match was commenced by Gomez, he was unable to hold his serve and endorsed three crucial breaks in the first, third and the fifth games.
On the contrary, Sousa had scooped five successive games against his opponent to take a lead of five games is to love but he was unable to close the set in the following game. Mean while, Gomez made an amazing return and he too reeled off five successive games to tie the score at five games each by the end of the tenth game but it was unfortunate as he was unable to clog the opening game.
Although the match could’ve been shoved into a tiebreaker, it was an extremely lucky day for Sousa as he broke his adversary for the fourth and the last time in the eleventh game and as he served for the set, he hit an astonishing forehand winner to go one up in the match with a 7-5 victory.
Sousa initiated the second round and this time he squandered three successive games by capitalizing on a breakpoint in the second game and with a hold of serve in the third. He was three games to love on the scoreboard.
In the fourth game Gomez held his serve for the first time and broke back in the fifth game to scoop two games and reduced the deficit to 2-3. However, Sousa also broke back immediately in the following game and with a hold of serve in the seventh game, he was now only a game away from making it into the next round.
As he served for the match, he held his serve for the last time to clog the second set with a 6-2 victory and in doing so he reserved a spot in the second round of the match where he will be facing second seeded Brazilian Joao Souza.
