Pedro de la Rosa: Red Bull’s defeat in 2011 season possible after British Grand Prix – Formula 1
McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa has stated that defeating Red Bull in the 2011 Formula 1 season is possible after Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso won the British Grand Prix.
Rosa added that apart from the pit-stop mistake in Sebastian Vettel’s pit-stop, Red Bull team issuing team orders at the end of the race to protect the lead of the German in the 2011 points table tells all the other Formula 1 teams that they are no more
the fastest in the season.
Rosa added that Alonso’s win in the Silverstone race does not only show the downfall of Red Bull but also the uprising of Ferrari as the Spaniard was able to open up a comprehensive lead.
The Spaniard stated, “Perhaps this has been the most convincing victory of the whole season. The mistake with Vettel's pit stop and Red Bull's need to issue team orders to protect their number one invites us to think that the comeback is now not a miracle.”
Rosa further added, “Maybe it will happen that we pay a high price for that (approach) but there is no alternative. We are definitely not giving up, but we must not think about the championship, as Montezemolo said, we are keeping our feet on the ground.”
After the ban on the off throttle blown diffuser by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) from the Silverstone Grand Prix and for the fact that the Red Bull boss Christian Horner argued with the FIA over that, it was evident that Red Bull will lose
some pace.
This was demonstrated in Silverstone when Vettel was right behind Alonso with just under 20 laps to go but soon the Spaniard literally took off and Vettel had to fight for the second position against his own teammate, Webber. Red Bull then ordered Webber
to slow down so that Vettel’s dominance in points table is not hurt.
Ten races are still to be contested in the 2011 season and it will be interesting to see how far the Red Bull team goes to protect Vettel’s lead because Webber is also starting to disobey team orders in order to improve his own points tally.
