Pedro de la Rosa believes Formula 1 must admit its steady move away from Europe – Formula 1 news
McLaren’s test driver Pedro de la Rosa believes that Formula 1 must admit that it is steadily moving away from the traditional European venues which is not a bad thing at all.
“We all know that the Grands Prix are usually contested in those countries which can permit it, and nowadays, the majority of countries which can permit it are now in the Near East or on the same continent, Asia,” he said.
The sport has been evolving and spreading into many other parts of the world including Asia, United States and in the future, even Africa. Bernie Ecclestone has played a major role in this matter as he has been the one who stood for new venues and took the
sport to higher levels.
As a result, the length of the season has been increasing a lot and the teams have stated that they are not going to allow more than 20 races per season. Therefore, de la Rosa believes that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) should now admit that
the sport is steadily moving out of the traditional European circuits and moving into other parts of the world.
“I understand that it is very hard for all those who, like me, grew up watching Formula 1 races at the Nurburgring, at Brands Hatch, Estoril or at the Paul Ricard circuit. But it is as obvious to recognise that the investment of Asian countries is supplanting
and even replacing the tradition of European countries,” he added.
Nevertheless, every sport moves on but there is definitely a way to cover the in-between journey of moving away from tradition. The sport is gradually doing so and it is believed that the US Grand Prix would become a part of the sport once again and later
on in 2013, a Russian Grand Prix is also expected to become a part of the Formula 1 calendar.
Bernie claims that an African Grand Prix is also being arranged and it will take place in South Africa if everything goes according to the plan.
