Pedroia admits foot surgery is probably the best idea
Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s season will officially come to an end if he undergoes surgery on his broken foot. Pedroia will have a CT scan done on the foot on Friday and if there are no signs of improvement, he will indeed have surgery.
"Putting in a s***w is probably the best idea,'' Pedroia said, "because there is a 90 percent chance that bone heals. I don't want to get to January, go through my workouts and don't feel good and miss some of next year. None of us want that to happen. I think putting in the s***w is probably the best idea.''
Pedroia suffered the fracture in a 25 June game against the San Francisco Giants. After finally coming off the disabled list in August, he experienced more pain in his foot and was put back on the DL just two days after his return. The plan was for him to rest a couple of weeks then see where the foot was at. The Red Sox have struggled in Pedroia’s absence, as he is perhaps their most important player.
Without a s***w, the bone has a 50 per cent chance of healing. "But it could still be what happened last time, play two games and not be able to walk the next day. So there's a good chance I'll have the surgery at some point.'' Pedroia said.
The Boston Red Sox have been plagued by injuries all year. Surgery will put Pedroia out for the season and the Red Sox have already lost Kevin Youkilis, Jacoby Ellsbury and Mike Cameron for the year. The Red Sox are also falling behind fast in the playoff race. They are 8.5 games back from the Yankees for the division lead and seven games behind Tampa Bay for the wild card spot. It would take a miracle for the Sox to recover in time and the task is harder without some of their key players.
