Pedroia may have surgery
Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is hoping he won't need surgery on the foot he fractured back in June. Pedroia spent six weeks on the disabled list before coming back for a short-lived return to the line-up. Just days after returning, he felt discomfort while he was running and was placed back on the disabled list.
Pedroia has undergone further tests and hopes that he’ll be able to get better through rest and rehab. Surgery on the foot would spell the end to his season and put a huge dent in the Red Sox line-up, which has suffered from the injury bug all season.
Pedroia fractured his foot in a June 25th game against San Francisco when he foul-tipped the ball onto the inside of his left foot. He missed 44 games before returning on August 17th but was only back for two games before the setback. He was cleared to play because his foot had healed and he wasn’t feeling any pain. Now the Red Sox are wondering if the foot has stopped healing.
"He's a little bit sore," Manager Terry Francona said. "There's no reason to push it right now, because he's on the disabled list. We would like, for his peace of mind, for everybody's peace of mind, to get more information. Then we'll move forward."
The Red Sox have missed Pedroia and can only wonder where they’d be in the pennant race if the player stayed healthy. They are still alive in the race to the AL East title and in the Wild Card hunt, but now they have a big series in Tampa Bay this weekend. This series could make or break their season. The Rays will have home-field advantage and can push the Sox further away from the division lead and build on their wild card lead. It will be interesting to see how the Red Sox are able to respond. Judging from the never-say-die attitude they’ve exhibited all season, they still won’t go away quietly.
