Question:

Peeling bark - cherry tree - what is causing it?

The bark is peeling off of my 3 year old cherry tree, and where it peels, the wood of the tree is dead. I had two apricots die of this, now it's happening to my cherries. It does this all along the main trunk, and on the secondary branches.

  1. It may be a type of canker. It could also be a insect problem.

If you have had other fruit trees die, you need to take a look at the growing conditions of your trees. Are they sited properly to get enough sun? Do they get enough water? Too much water?

Something is stressing the trees, which makes them susceptible to diseases and insect invasion. Until you determine what is causing the stress, you will continue to have problems.

You may want to go to a nursery that has knowledgeable people there and ask. You may also want to have an Arborist come and take a look at  your trees. It would probably be worth the money if these trees are valuable in the landscape, meaning that it would be expensive to replace them. The Arborist would be able to tell you what the stressors are on the trees and what is causing the injuries.
