Pegasus Racing announces new sports director line-up
Chris White, CEO of Pegasus Sports, has taken another step toward setting up his team as top-level competitor in road cycling with the hiring of two former-ProTour sports directors onto the staff. Sports
directors Hendrik Redant of Omega Pharma-Lotto and Egon van Kessel of the Cervélo TestTeam will be calling the new Australian cycling team home in 2011, joining Henk Vogels and Ed Beamon who have come to the team from its Continental predecessor Fly V Australia.
“With Hendrik, Henk, Egon and Ed as our sports directors, we are bringing to our team a lot of different characters with different backgrounds, but with a lot of experience,” said White in a team press
release. “This team of sports directors will work really well together, as we saw already in the first meetings we had.”
The Australian team applied for a ProTeam license for 2011, but their ranking in sporting criteria suggests that they will most likely be competing with Pro Continental status next season. Redant will
be the most experienced of the four sports directors and has already worked with Robbie McEwen, the highest-level cyclist at Pegasus Racing.
“The chance to create something new together with these guys appeals to me, and I think it will also be a lot of fun.”
Their latest signing, Belgian cyclist Dominique Cornu, has also worked with Robbie McEwen before, when they raced together at Silence-Lotto under Redant’s direction. The 25-year-old has been confirmed
to make the transfer from Skil-Shimano and begin a one-year contract with Pegasus.
"I was talking with other teams but even though this project was new I knew it was a big Australian team and it had big ambitions," said Cornu to
Cyclingnews. "I'd been talking to them for a long time and I was looking forward to this agreement."
