Question:

Pellet Stove Vent Installation?

I bought a pellet furnace and it came with a vent pipe the previous owner had used. It doesn't work in my house as it's not long enough. To make up the difference I was going to use a plain piece of 3" galvanized single wall pipe. It's just a 2ft section and isn't near anything so any heat off of it wouldn't hurt anything. Is it safe otherwise?

  1. No. There are several reasons you should buy true stove pipe. Galvanized pipe should never be heated as galvanized steel gives off a dangerous gas at even low heat temperatures. It is not safe for this purpose.

Also the metals used in stove piping is specifically engineered for this purpose and while it may not be near anything it may not conduct the heat in the manner you need without warping or melting.

Should there be any type of accident your insurance company may not pay if you used an improper material.

  2. Your pellet stove has a double wall vent pipe.Contact the manufacterer and buy the right pipe. Or check the battery in your smoke alarm daily and read your homeowners policy and make certain it covers wood stoves improperly installed.
