Question:

Penalized for conceding the nine?

The tournament I played in this past weekend went by WPBA rules. One that I learned was that if you give your opponent the nine, you are penalized one game. So if you're down 5-3, the nine is sitting in the pocket and you stand up and give it to your opponent, the score is now 6-2. What do you guys think of that? I was sort of relieved because I don't like giving people the nine (although I do it from time to time), plus I know it can be used psychologically by giving your opponents the easy ones and making them shoot ones that are just slightly more difficult. They're thinking to themselves, "Why do I have to shoot this?" and miss...But what do you guys think? Penalization excessive or not?

  1. That is a stiff penalty , would they give your opponent the case game? Anyway, I agree with Johnny , NEVER give them anything. I've seen too many good players miss even the easiest shot and you never know when they might just miscue.

  2. Hey Lea, I know what you mean. That rule caught me by surprise a couple years ago.

Fortunately for me I was watching a match where that very thing happened. It grabbed my attention real fast NOT to give the '9' up.

Your situation went from 5-3 to 6-2, backwards for you... the way this tourney went was the opponent got another game... from 5-3 to 7-3, he got that win plus a freebie.

It's another one of those "place" rules... you play by the rules they go by in that place.

    Hope you did well, Jay

  3. Dont give them S-- make them shoot every shot.

But yes if they expect you to give the nine they may not try to get pos on it if they think your gonna give it to them

But my ans is dont give it in the first place

A penalty in that case is easy to avoid

Exactly Mickey thats why never give it

  4. It really avoids or prevents issues....they start giving you a "duck"....what or who determines that his shot on the 9 is not a "duck"....seen big time arguments about this and having this rule avoids this....make them earn it....he might just forget to chalk up and miscue or just miss it....it is amazing how hard that 2-3 inch walk up the rail can get for anyone when its the money ball......use the rule and every earns their wins and no issues!
