Pencil in skin on kid?

My 4 year old was sharpening a pencil and she pushed it on her hand and a tiny piece it looks like went into her skin what do i do?

  1. well, relax, it isn't lead...pencils are made with graphite, an innocuous substance.  If it is deep, then I'd have a doctor remove it because it could be an avenue for infection...if it is not, then just remove it with tweezers.


  2. If she can withstand the extraction, dig it out like you would a sliver.  Otherwise, wait until it festers and her body pushes it out...unpleasant, either way.  Keep in mind that pencils now days do not contain actual lead, so there is no danger of exposure to that element.

  3. Remove it. Just like a splinter. Unless its a really old pencil it doesn't have any lead in it.

  4. Boy does this bring back memories! When I was about four, I got a pencil lead impaled in the palm of my hand. There is still a dark mark of it I can barely see to this day. Nothing ever happened. We never took it out. I was worried about lead poisoning, but (duh!) I realized it's graphite, not lead.
