Peng Shuai overpowers Sara Errani in the 2nd round – Western & Southern Open 2011
Contesting on hard courts of the Lindner Family Tennis Center were Chinese Peng Shuai and Italian Sara Errani. World number 25 Shuai got rid of world number 24 Errani in a 6-2, 6-4 victory during the second round of the Western
and Southern Open 2011 in 89 minutes of play.
The two had just recently met during the Carlsbad event, California, U.S.A. this year. Peng had triumphed over her opponent with 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(7) victory and had equalized the head to head score to a 2-2.
Errani had managed to get 57% of her first serves on target, however, she lost most of her points in the second serve and hence, attained only 40% of her total service points, against Shuai, who had a strong back hand as was able
to respond to most of her opponent’s shots, hence she was able to achieve 60% of her total return points.
Shuai not only had a stronger return but a commendable serve, with well placed baseliners and an assertive forearm that won her an exceptional 59% of her total service points. Errani, on the other hand was only able to play a few
of her shots and managed to win a meagre 41% of her total return points.
The world number 25 accomplished 60% of her total service points and broke her opponent one more time than Errani, who had won only 1 out of 5 break points.
Amidst the second set Errani had managed to hit 63% of her first serves on target but struggled to achieve a good score in her second serve and thus, attained a 53% win in her total service points. Mean while, Peng had a mediocre
return and bagged 47% of her return points.
Shuai utilized her forearm as a deadly weapon that won her 61% of her total service points, against the Italian, who only mustered a pitiable return during the first, winning 39% of her total return points.
The Italian was hardly able to win 1 out of the 3 break points and managed to save only 2 out of the 4 break points and struck no aces.
While, Shuai struck an ace and broke her opponent twice, hence, she capitalized on 50% of her rival’s break points and was able to save 67% of her break points on her serve.
The second set was bagged after a good 40 minutes plus and by accomplishing 54% of the total service points by Shuai.
