Peng Shuai to make her second appearance at ASB Classic in 2012 – Tennis News
Chinese women tennis is rocking the world with some outstanding performances by their number one tennis icon, Li Na making her way to the top 5 world rankings. Perhaps it’s a start to an emphatic era for women tennis in china to
make its name at world class level and maintain it for a long time period.
World No17, Peng Shuai, is another tennis icon from China who has broken into the top 20 rankings for the first time this year and is set to make a comeback to Auckland next year after making an impressive debut this year. She
has put forth her desire to play ASB Classic tournament next year and it has been approved by the tournament officials as well.
It will be yet another opportunity for the Chinese number two to make an impact at world level and clinch her first Auckland title. ASB Classic Tournament director, Richard Palmer, was very happy to have her own board and proclaimed
“She was one of those rare gems; there was almost no negotiations at all. Through her agent, she sent an email to us saying she had really enjoyed playing here and would she be able to come back. I didn't take long to reply."
Shuai requested for her extra accommodation that will cost some extra dollars to the tournament but it was happily accepted by the tournament director as he didn’t wanted to lose such a classy player for such minimal savings.
Director of the tournament still has one major breathtaking announcement to make about one of the most wanted players at tennis circuits but he will disclose that news later. For the time being, Shuai will join in the likes of
former world no.1, Serena Williams, and world no.15, Sabine Lisicki, in the draws.
Crowd loved Shuai’s performance this year and she made it to the semi-finals of the tournament, lost to second seed Yanina Wickmayer, and left behind some emphatic upsets that brought her in the limelight. While talking about her
performance this year and ASB Classic tournament, she said, “I don't really consider myself famous but I do get recognised more now in China on the street [in] restaurants and especially at the airport.” Talking about Auckland she further added “It's a beautiful
city - I love the ocean, the street life and the restaurants."
ASB Classic tournament will start from 2nd January 2012.
