Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh enter into Mixed Doubles quarter-final at Singapore Open
Malaysia’s ace shuttler Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh had to employ all of their skills to reach into Mixed Doubles semi-final as they narrowly defeated Japan’s Noriyasu Hirata and Miyuki Maeda at the round-of-16 stage in Singapore Open Super Series 2012
in Singapore, on Thursday, June 21.
The World Number 8 Peng Soon and Liu Ying, who are seeded at number three in Mixed Doubles draw of the tournament, had to dig into their arsenal while playing against their lower ranked Japanese opponents and won the match in a close fashion.
The third seeded Peng Soon and Liu Ying took the first game with a tight margin but failed to maintain their superiority and lost the following set. Nevertheless, they played to their maximum potential in the decider and wrapped up victory in rubber sets.
In the meanwhile, Noriyasu and Miyuki, who have been playing terrific badminton for the last one year, put up strong resistance but failed to cope up with the aggression of their Malaysian rivals in the final set and lost to them with a reasonable score
on the board.
In the first game, Peng Soon and Liu Ying put up strong show of aggressive and positive badminton and reached at 11-7 until the break.
After the interval, the lower ranked Japanese shuttlers also showed their aggression and levelled the score at 17-17.
The score progressed closely at this stage and reached at 20-20 when Peng Soon and Liu Ying showed their brilliance and managed to wrap up the game with a tight score of 22-20.
In the second game, the higher ranked Malaysian couple again remained dominant in the opening half and took a small lead of 11-9 until the break.
After the interval, the Japanese shuttlers played better badminton as they controlled the pace while working well in all areas of the court.
In the meanwhile, Peng Soon and Liu Ying could not play dominating game and lost the set with a margin of 18-21.
In the final set, the higher ranked Peng Soon and Liu Ying played at their best as they remained dominant in the whole game and took it with a huge difference of 21-14.
Peng Soon and Liu Ying won this three-set entertaining fight against their Japanese opponents with an interesting score of 22-20, 18-21 and 21-14.
