Peng Soon - Goh Liu Ying crush Nathan Robertson - Jenny Wallwork at the 2011 World Championships
Malaysia’s spirited duo of Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying crushed England’s Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork in the Mixed Doubles second round of the 2011 World Championships, at the Wembley Indoor Arena in London, on Wednesday, August 10.
World Number 17 pair, Peng Soon and Liu Ying played to their full potential and silenced the local crowd by playing tremendous badminton against Robertson and Wallwork to win the match in straight games by taking 42 minutes. The English couple failed to
cope with the attacking game of the Malaysians, who were playing perfectly.
In the opening set of the match, the Malaysian couple delivered a wonderful performance by controlling the pace of the game. They were quite quick in picking the bird from the tape of the net and their powerful smashes coupled with perfect pushes earned
them opening set with the tight score of 21-19.
The second game was also identical as both pairs put up a strong show of quality badminton and remained close until the ending points of the match. However, the Malaysians again remained successful in scoring the ending points and won the set with a 21-19
score.
After the match, Peng Soon said, “We had studied their game and we did the right thing by slowing down the game. It worked ... it broke their rhythm. We were trailing (11-15) in the second game but we did not panic. We kept our cool and slowly got back into
the game. It was an important win for us.”
In the Mixed Doubles third round, Peng Soon and Liu Ying are set to play against Yao Lei and Chayut Triyachart of Singapore.
Liu Ying said, “But we cannot take this Singapore pair lightly. They made it to the third round after an upset win. We stayed calm during the match against the English pair and we must do the same against the Singaporean pair.”
The Malaysian couple is determined to perform to their full potential in their upcoming match and are confident to continue their winning streak in the mega event.
