Peng Soon sets high target in Yonex Sunrise India Open – Badminton News
The Mixed Doubles expert Chan Peng Soon of Malaysia is determined to write a new saga of success in Yonex Sunrise India Open which has started from April 24 in New Delhi.
Peng Soon teams up Goh Liu Ying and the duo is currently placed at seventh position in world ranking but male member of the couple thinks they must try for a breakthrough in this tournament.
The Malaysian couple has fond memories of India as they earned first Mixed Doubles Asian Championships title here back in 2010.
They have registered their class in recent past when they surged into semi-final round of All England Open last month and now Peng Soon vows to end the talk that they lack good finishing skills.
He intends to make the best out of the Indian event as he claimed to start new journey to success from Deli.
Peng Soon said, “Liu Ying and I have reached the semi-finals of several Super Series events over the past two years. It’s time for a breakthrough now. We will push ourselves to reach our first final in Delhi.”
The duo Peng Soon-Liu Ying is country’s biggest hope for an Olympic medal and they want to boost their confidence by excelling in India Open which also serves as an Olympic qualifying tournament.
Apparently, they stand fair chance to make their cut into final round as two strong contenders Chris Adcock-Imogen Bankier from England and the World Number two Chinese pair Xu Chen-Ma Jin have pulled out their names from the race.
Now the Malaysian couple has relatively easy ride in opening rounds however Peng Soon is cautious about their first round match with Korean pair Yoo Yeon Seong-Jang Ye Na as he indicated that they will be careful against lower ranked competitors.
He said, “This Korean pair are ranked 19th in the world but are quite formidable. We shouldn’t let our guard down against them.”
However, they will have to face big guns like Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia and the Chinese pair He Hanbin-Bao Yixin in final rounds of the event.
Meanwhile, it will be a tough trial for Women’s Doubles team Chin Eei h*i-Wong Pei Tty who must maintain their current 16th spot in world ranking to secure their berth in the 2012 London Olympics.
