Peninsula Petroleum Sailing Team leads at 2011 RC44 World Championships in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote
RC44 World Championship spectators witnessed some unexpected results on the opening day of the championship at Puerto Calero, in Lanzarote, as John Bassadone’s Peninsula Petroleum Sailing Team hit the top podium finish at the conclusion of the day with eight
points after three races.
Bassadone recruited Italy’s Vasco Vascotto as their pro-skipper before entering the championship, which proved to be a great decision and now, the new team is paying dividends with the best of their performances right from the start of the tournament.
The weather conditions on Day 1 were quite challenging and shifty which was the reason for standings to shake up a bit for the 14 competing teams. Vascotto’s team clinched two second finishes and a fourth to occupy the top spot on the leaderboard.
Result board on Day 1 finish:
1. Peninsula Petroleum Sailing Team 2, 2, 4 = 8 points
2. Artemis Racing 4, 5, 1 = 10 points
3. Islas Canarias Puerto Calero 3, 1, 7 = 11 points
4. No Way Back 1, 12, 3 = 16 points
5. Ironbound 9, 3, 5 = 17 points
6. AEZ Sailing Team 5, 7, 9 = 21 points
7. Katusha 8, 11, 2 = 21 points

9. Team Aqua 7, 8, 10 = 25 points
10. Synergy Russian Sailing Team 12, 9, 6 = 27 points
Speaking to the media at the conclusion of Day 1, tactician, Vasco Vascotto said, “John and the guys did some fantastic manoeuvres and perfect driving in the shifts and we enjoyed it. It’s good. At least one of the days of the Championship has gone our way!”
On the other hand, boat owner, Bassadone, added, “We start again tomorrow from scratch, we have built into the plan that we might have some bad results during the week. It’s so shifty here that you have to take it on the chin and carry on, which is exactly
what we did after the first beat of today, we were literally last but we carried on and managed to climb up the leader board.”
Despite clicking a bullet in their score line, Sweden’s Artemis Racing could secure only second position with 10 points, while local favourites, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero finished third with just a one-point difference from the Swedish team.
