Penn State University men’s volleyball team sweeps George Mason to win title – Volleyball news
Penn State University men’s volleyball team had an interesting Saturday night this past weekend.
The team was up against George Mason and the match between the two took place at the Rec Hall. Playing at their home court, Penn State was able to win the match in three back-to-back sets. Not only did they seal the deal on George Mason, the Nittany Lions
also won the title of the champions of the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association matches.
This is not the first time that the Nittany Lions have earned themselves the honour of being called the champions of the prestigious conference play matches, in fact, Penn State has already got the championship title under its bag for the past 12 times.
The victory achieved on Saturday made it the 13thtime that the Nittany Lions would be termed as the winners of the EIVA.
After winning the match, the Nittany Lions have brought their overall season wins to a total number of 20. These moments of glory have been felt after the Nittany Lions suffered defeats that equal a commendably low amount of five.
The record of Penn State’s wins and losses in the EIVA gives a clear picture of why the Nittany Lions are now termed as the champions. Penn State has had victories that amount to a figure of 10. However, they have won their EIVA against registering no loss
at all during conference play.
In contrast to this, the overall season record of the Patriots show a performance that turns pale in comparison with that of the number ten ranking Nittany Lions. The amount of wins that the Patriots have been able to tally in this season so far total to
be 14.
As opposed to the victories that the Patriots have achieved, the defeats that they have undergone have reached a figure of nine. In the EIVA, the Patriots have earned themselves wins that amount to six. These wins have been accomplished at the expense of
two losses.
The first set of the match remained interesting until the end. The game was brought to a match point, after which the Lions geared up and chased the Patriots away with the help of Joe Sunder, who won Penn State the first set of the game at 28-26.
In the second set of the game, the Nittany Lions took the lead early on in the set at 7-2. After that point however, the offense of the Lions seemed to degrade. Fortunately for Penn State, this did not hinder them from winning the second set at 25-20. After
getting the first two sets of the match under their bag, the Lions also took the third at 25-21.
Mark Pavlik, the coach for the Nittany Lions was not satisfied with the performance that his team put up despite having won the day.
“I thought this was a fairly uneven match for us,” Pavlik said. “There were stretches where I thought [George Mason] played defensively really well. They dug balls. We had trouble putting balls away in stretches.”
