Penn State men’s volleyball team defeats Rutgers-Newark – Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball
Penn State men’s volleyball team competed against the Rutgers-Newark in Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match.
What followed was an interesting display of inconsistency by the Nittany Lions in the end of which they were finally able to seal the deal on the Scarlet Raiders.
The match went on for four long and thrilling sets that kept the spectators on the edge. No one was sure where the tables would during the entire length of the game.
However, it was the Lions who were able to secure themselves a seat in the final of the EIVA Championship. This would not be the first time that the Lions would be advancing to the final round of the EIVA, rather, they have been able to accomplish this feat
in the past for 12 times. This time around, it would be the thirteenth consecutive appearance that the Nittany Lions would be making in the championship match of the EIVA.
When the Nittany Lions had secured the final point over the Scarlet Raiders and started celebrating their entry in final match, the scoreboard summarised scores as 25-14, 16-25, 25-16, 25-19.
The first set of the match went the way of the Nittany Lions as they were able to take control of the game by securing a lead for themselves.
Once they were in control, the Nittany Lions kept the pressure on the Scarlet Raiders during the entire course of the first set by outhitting them. None of the Nittany Lions posted a hitting percentage of less than .400.
On the other hand, the Scarlet Raiders did a very poor job of making only four kills and posting a dismally low hitting percentage of -.067.
After having lost the opening game of the match, the Scarlet Raiders were able to step up their game in the second set. The Raiders came out strong at the start and took a considerable lead at 11-0. The Nittany Lions could not recover from the huge deficit
that the Scarlet Raiders dealt out to them. Consequently, the second set of the match went to the Raiders at 25-16.
However, this was the only moment of glory that the Raiders were able to enjoy as the next two sets were taken by the Nittany Lions at 25-16 and 25-19.
The coach of the Nittany Lions, Mark Pavlik, made the following comments upon the termination of the match, “We’ve got to stay physical with them. And I think like any other team that comes into Rec Hall, we’ve got to make sure that they understand that
if they’re going to win, they’ve got to play at a pretty physical level for a pretty long time.”
