Penn State men’s volleyball team sweeps past Springfield on Saturday
Volley has been achieving ever increasing popularity in the US for several years. The sport now has various tournaments both at the national as well as the international level in which both the women as well as the men find the opportunity to display their
skill and talent. These tournaments are held at an annual basis so that the sport achieves stability and the teams are able to improve their standard year after year.
One such tournament that has a high level of credibility amongst the athletes that play volleyball is the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association tournament. Recently, a thrilling match was held between two competitive teams that reminded the spectators
once more why the EIVA tournament is held in such high esteem.
The match that took place on Saturday was contested between the Penn State volleyball team and Springfield. In an exciting display of skill, the Nittany Lions were able to make a clean sweep on their rivals.
Despite the fact that they lost the match, Springfield did not go down without putting up a fight. By the time that the Nittany Lions were celebrating the win achieved by bagging three back-to-back sets and Springfield was trudging out of the court with
heavy hearts, the scoreboard summarised the scores as 25-20, 25-14 and 26-24.
With their recent win, the Nittany Lions have been able to tally a total of 24 victories in this season so far. The number of times they had to undergo a defeat while pulling these wins off equal to the amount of six.
The win has given several reasons of joy to the 10th ranked Nittany Lions. Saturday’s win has meant that the title of the champions of the EIVA goes to Penn State for the 13th consecutive time. Not only that, by scrapping themselves the victory, the Nittany
Lions have been able to move on to the Final Four of the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament.
The start of the first set of the match went fairly even. Both the teams were almost neck-to-neck with each other. However, as the set reached its middle, the Nittany Lions started to take dominance of the court. Once they had a significant lead for themselves,
the Nittany Lions did not let it go until they had bagged the initial set of the game at 25-20.
The second set of the match did not fare well for Springfield. They had a hard time stopping the Nittany Lions as they charged ahead. Penn state was able to win the second as well as the third set at 25-14 and 26-24 respectively.
Up next for the Nittany Lions is a match against the Buckeyes. The contest is scheduled to be played on coming Thursday.
