the 3 letters spell a number like

t w and o would be 2

hun would be hundred 100

you mean the 3 letter code you generally uncover while scratching the ticket?

they generally co-inside with the prize. up to i think its $250. but yeah itll be like

o n e, t w o, t h r, etc.

if it has an X its a loser, im pretty sure thats true with L's and D's as well.

They must have changed it around.  I worked at a lottery retailer in PA in college a few years ago, and the way to tell the winners was the numbers in parenthases on the tickets.

Sounds illegal.  You wouldn't have access to the codes unless you were in a retail environment where you could inspect the tickets prior to purchase.  Naughty, naughty.  

Such behavior is stealing from the hard working folks who trustingly spend their hard earned cash on a CHANCE to win.  Research shows that the more desperate one is, the more likely they are to purchase lottery tickets.  Those are the people you'd be stealing from.  Tsk, tsk.
