Pennys Viking beats Droopys Greg at Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby trial to run the Shelbourne Classic
Going in at 5/2, Pennys Viking defeated 4/6 favourite, Droopys Greg, at the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby trial stakes at Hove to be awarded with a spot in the Shelbourne Classic. The Dean Childs’ pupil started off fast and gave a tough time to Droopys Greg,
leading him by three lengths at halfway.
In his defence, Droopys Greg also put up a good fight as he tried to close the distance between the two by challenging the winner from inside.
They reached the finish line at almost the same time but the stewards declared Pennys Viking as the winner as he had covered the 515 meter distance in 29.78 seconds.
They were followed by Glideaway Rumble who finished more than four lengths behind the two.
Both the dogs are in good form for the Ladbrokes.com Irish Derby as they come fresh off major championships.
Pennys Viking was last seen racing at the Coral Greyhound Olympic where he reached the finals and finished second only to Diesel Malc.
He was seen covering the 515 meter distance in 29.56 seconds, landing a place position by ¾ lengths.
The two-year-old hound started his career in June 2010 and he won the first race he ran. This was not merely a case of beginner’s luck as he won the second race he competed in as well.
Droopys Greg, son of Weatmead Diver and Droopys Sporty, also reached the semifinal of the Coral Greyhound Olympic, where he sprinted from Trap 6 but finished in third place while Diesel Malc won.
Prior to this he had defeated Diesel Malc at the same track, running the same distance by 4 ½ lengths.
The 2nd of June, 2011, marked Pennys Viking’s first victory in an all-aged race at the Coral Olympic trial stakes at Hove, thanks to Nick Savva’s training.
It is expected that the two will provide tough competition to each other at the Derby but what is even more evident after this trial is that the two might face little competition from their other competitors as even the third place runner did not come even
close to posing a challenge to either of them.
