Penrith Panthers appoint Phil Gould their new coach - Rugby News
The Penrith Panthers have announced Phil Gould their coaching director for next three and half years.
He has been assigned the duties to oversee the coaching structure of the Panthers to revive their past performance in the National Rugby League. He will take the charge of club on Monday to reform the struggling Panthers.
The Penrith Panthers confirmed today that the double title winning and famous media commentator would join their club on Monday. They further said that their current coach Elliott will continue his role until the end of his contract. Elliot’s contract will
come to an end after the conclusion of the recent season. Panther’s Chief Executive Mick Leary said that it would be interesting for him to watch the working relations of Elliot and newly appointed Gould.
Leary added that Gould was also offered the position of head coach which he turned down and now his job would be to invigilate the whole coaching staff. He further told the media that Gould would appoint a new head coach of Penrith after Elliot exits.
On the other hand, a statement released by Panthers Chairman Don Feltis today revealed Gould is definitely joining the Panthers but his exact place is not defined. Feltis went on to say, "Phil will work closely with Michael Leary, Shannon Donato, Jason Wrigley,
Jim Jones and the management team and will have direct involvement in all aspects of rugby league and in particular the coaching and team support operation."
Gould is reported to accept the role as a challenge for him and gave a message to his club, “You've got a fight on your hands for Sydney's west”. He shifted his conversation while saying, "Teams like Penrith, Wests Tigers and Parramatta are really the ones
under challenge in the heartland out there where the great rugby league supporters are. We face a big challenge from AFL who are looking to gain a foothold there."
Gould has played for the Panthers for three years from 1976 to 1979. He has also the prestige of being youngest skipper of the Panthers.
