Question:

Pentax K100d lenses question- which to buy?

(I originally posted this in the wrong section- sorry)

I've pretty much decided on the Pentax K100d as my first DSLR (it's $550 with 18-55mm lens- but if I could get a canon or nikon for that amount w/starter lens, I'd be open to that too).

I'm going on a trip to Africa, and I want to know which lenses are the best to buy. I know I need one for great landscapes, but I'm not sure what else would be a good choice. So, what's the best landscape lens for the k100d and what other 2 lenses should I look into?

Thanks!

  1. Where do you live? There are several DSLR kits available in the U.S. for under $550 through on-line retailers. Here are some of your choices, in no particular order:

    - Nikon D40 w/ 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6: $450

    - Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) w/ 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6: $480

    - Sony Alpha A200 w/ 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6: $475

    - Olympus E-410 w/ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6: $450

    - Olympus E-410 w/ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 & 40-150mm f/4-5.6: $515

    - Olympus E-510 w/ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6: $490

    - Olympus E-510 w/ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 & 40-150mm f/4-5.6: $550

Assuming you've chosen to stick with Pentax: what's your budget for the two lenses? If the kit lens isn't adequate for your wide-angle needs you'll need something wider. If you plan on going on safaris or are interested in taking wildlife pictures then you'll need a long telephoto lens too. There's no way to help any further without a budget. The quality you can get is only limited by the green in your pocket.
