If you take seeds from a peony flower and then plant them will they "grow up" to be the same type of peony as the one it came from? Or will it have different colors and stuff?

  1. A Peony would not be the best to seed with because it is a bulb. Also seedlings are very tempermental if you can even get them to sprout.

Side note peonies are strange and probably wont grow especially since if you plant the bulb at the wrong depth it wont even flower.

I have had good turn out from lupine seeds although they are not really similar

  2. Yes, the color of the peony may change with the seeds.

    Q. My yellow peony went white right after a late cold snap. What happened? Can peonies change color?

    A. Yes and no. The truth is that peony plants don't change in bloom color, but they do seed, and the seedlings often will bloom a different color.

  3. Growing a peony from a seed is next to impossible.  It would take many years for it to grow to a flowering plant.  However, that's how new peonies are found and developed.  There are some peonies that don't get seed pods.  None of mine do.   I dig up my peonies in the fall and simply divide the "tubers" into multiple plants.  Don't divide too late, give them time to make some roots.  Sometimes if the divisions are too small, they'd don't come back in the spring.  So, leave your divisions fairly good size.  And the plant that grows will be just like it's mother.  If you're looking to multiply your plants, divide.  If you want to experiment looking for new colors, plant your seeds and wait... and wait...
