People always ask me why I'm a vegetarian what should i say?

...because I don't like stealing the life force energy of another living being if I can get it by eating the same plants that they do.  In other words, why gain energy vicariously through the death of another living being when I can gain the same by eating what they eat?

For example, people always site iron as something we need from animals.  However heme, or blood iron is what we get from animals and it is simply a condensed version of the iron we can get from eating the same plants they eat.

It's a pretty dumb question really. Most people are vegetarian for much the same reasons. No one would need to ask you if they had actually thought about what they said.

Well, there are plenty of reasons that may or may not apply to you - health reasons (such as all the degenerative diseases you're avoiding), environmental (you're saving greenhouse gases, water use, land use, biodiversity etc.) and animal cruelty!

Generally it's good to personalise your answer (say that vegetarianism is your particular way to deal with environmental destruction (or whatever it is). There are other ways, but this is the way you've chosen.

When you say that, you are getting your point across without implying disapproval of the questioner for not being vegetarian themselves.

I always had a hard time responding to people that ask why. They dont really want to know the whole story.

I have heard people respond by asking them the same question. It gets the person to realize how annoying it is.

I've had a few vegetarian friends over the years. Usually the reason is because they don't believe in eating animals, they just don't like meat or they think it is healthier.

Just tell people the truth! Who cares what they think.

Tell them the truth, the reason you have made his decision, stand up for yourself and be ready to answer people head on...even though technically it is a personal choice and you don't need to explain yourself! BTW-you are doing a wonderful thing-I wish I had that kind of will power!!!

Say you are vegetarian because you don't eat meat.  You can go into a big ramble about farming practices etc... but if it is annoying you then just say the above and that you don;t have to explain it to everyone.
