  1. Freedom of Speech is a balance act.  It's one thing to speak out against evil, it's another thing to speak to promote evil.  If one bases their validity to insult, attack another's persona, race, or differences solely on the generalization  of the right to Free Speech, then our society would be in more chaos & violence than it already is.  Our past is an indicator to this phenomena, that is why we moved towards a more civilized approach with implimenting rules, laws, etiquette, & morals.  However, these behaviors can be abused to an extreme, such as not allowing employees to wish customers a Merry Christmas around Christmas.  To promote ethnic equality over the supression of another is an oxymoron.  Extreme PC in another form such as this CNN report... http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/05/03/airforc...

is placing one groups beliefs over anothers.

To be careful of what you say, how you say it, & why you say it is in the interest of everyone, because, the human race is an over growing population & so too is intolerance & non-understanding with each other, which leads to the distruction of us all through war, violence, & hatred.  So, being politically correct is merely a form of communication & cooperation that has an ebb & flow & needs to be balanced by challenging it & enforcing it.  It is an ever evolving behavioral monitor that has it's pro's & con's, but is a must in order for us to evolve as a species.

  2. Yes, because as we all know we all have the right not to be offended.  It's in the Constitution right next to the article stating that foreigners have more rights than Americans in our own country.

  3. We have lost alot of freedoms.

  4. How dare you call me PC.  I'd take you to court and sue you if I had your real name. lol

  5. There is merit to what you say.

Of course you don't get arrested for saying non-PC things; that's a comfort.  And I don't mind having a code of conduct on the job, assuming it helps the business run more smoothly.  Hassles at work can impede productivity.

But within reason!  People shouldn't be so fragile that they can't tolerate hearing something they don't like or agree with.  On the other hand, people should avoid offending their co-workers if they can.

But in academia, free speech is really suppressed.  Conservatives, skeptics of Gorbal Warming catastrophe, and scientists who suspect that the universe was created by something, are largely suppressed.  As a student you can get through by giving the "right" answers often enough to pass the courses.  But if you want to teach, you'd better not let them know that you can think for yourself!

  6. Freedom of speech? What freedom of speech? You can't even say a joke without fear of offending someone or risk of being charged with a hate crime.

The other day I told an elephant joke, and the animal rights people got on my case.

  7. I don't think we've necessarily lost our Freedom of Speech.  We've still got the ability to say, essentially whatever we want.  It's just that now people have become much more aware of everyone around them and how the things they say can affect the people around them..good or bad.

  8. Yes, and since 9/11 it's gotten worse. We don't want to p**s anybody off and our leaders are afraid to say anything which is why our country is struggling the way it is now.

  9. People are so ridiculous these days, euphemisms for everything.

Some people need to grow a set and also develop a thicker skin.

    European American.  No, it's White

    African American,  No, it's Black

    Mentally Challenged.  No, it's retarded

Mentally Incapable of standing trial:  It means you are effin crazy.

  10. No we just are more considerate of people's feelings.

  11. I dont think we have lost our freedom of speech as such, but we are definately more aware of other people and how they would react to certain statements.

  12. why are you wearing my hat

  13. No we havent really lost our freedom of speech, but the PC brigade got a law on the books to charge white people with.

It's called the "hate crime" law.

  14. I think we've simply become more aware how hurtful speech can be if not controlled.

Freedom of speech only applies to one's right to criticize the government, not to hurt someone else.

  15. yes.

people taking things too far means that we need to censor ourselves - having think too much before we speak.

  16. By George, I think he's got it!!

(Hope I didn't offend anyone with that?)

  17. No. You just don't like the consequences that often come with speaking freely. I hear you on that one.

Some people are ultra sensitive or easily offended. But you can speak freely with consideration of other's feelings. I value honesty as long as people are going to listen to others and not be so quick to rush to judgment. For me personally, I can take people being honest. I may not always like it but I'm not so thin skinned that I'm going to cry about it. Sometimes you have to learn to read between the lines. There are people out there like that. I am always relieved when I find them or they find me.

  18. People are so d**n sensitive these days you can barely say anything.
