  2. Mowing grass short makes it much easier for weeds seeds to get started. Tall grass, about 2-3 inches,  shades the soil slowing or stopping weed seed germination. Short grass has no leaf blade to photosynthesize with so it can't feed itself. This slows root growth leaving more room for weeds.  Shallow, weak roots make the grass much more vulnerable to stress from insects, fungus, and lack of water. A healthy lawn only needs one inch of water, including rain, a week to stay green.

    Research at OSU with "Kentucky bluegrass has shown that root growth was more than twice as great when the grass was mowed at a 2.0 inch height verses a 0.75 inch height.

    It is best to mow frequently to keep the height even than to keep it scalped short and need to constantly feed it. This way the blade never looses more than 1/3 of its length and never stops photosynthesizing.
