  1. I immediately think/...

    How lucky!

    Mahalo!

  2. I used to be from Hawaii!

It's one of the most culturally diverse places on earth!

On the island of Oahu, for example, there were 40% Oriental (Mongoloid), 25% local (Polynesian), 20% Caucasian & 15% Black (Neegroid)...

The children of mixed marriages were beautiful. Sometimes with black, red and blond hair growing naturally on the same head!

Everyone speaks a little "pidgeon" English (Dialect with slang)...

And, anyone coming from the Mainland/USA, is called a "Haowlee" (foreigner)!

  3. this is the place where EAST meets WEST.  so,  when you visit Hawaii, you see Asians acting Westerners and Westerners acting Asians.  the local people are made up with these two qualities, that's what makes it unique.   their appearance is also unique because it evolve with both east and west physical characteristics and last and most important, the culture, very desirable because again, its a mixture of both sides of the planet.  imagine that!!

  4. Honestly?  I think "tropical escape" for myself.  As I look at them, I feel a warm breeze and hear the waves crashing along the beach.  Also, I think: "Man, you guys don't have to deal with these cold Chicago winters."  It's selfish, but that's what I think when someone indicates they're from Hawaii or that they've visited Hawaii.

  5. When I lived there 20 years ago, I was shocked at the violence and tempers of the locals.  It is like many of them are overcharged with testosterone.  For example, if you pass one and pull back into the lane too soon, like less than 100 feet, they will follow you and beat you to unconsciousness.  I have seen it happen multiple times so it is some sort of cultural thing.  They are very nice people if you don't accidentally offend them but it is dangerous there for Haoles (pronounced Howlies).  Howlies are what they call white people who are new to the islands.  Japanese are given even less consideration.

My boss was a Hawaiian/Portuguese and his wife was mostly Hawaiian.  I was invited to their house on several occasions and their extended family was very close knit and friendly.  I was never worried about offending them because they treated me like a member of the family when they first met me.  They even tried to set me up with their daughter who was a tanning lotion model but she had other ideas.

I was an honor guard at a Hawaiian funeral.  I was very surprised that there was no apparent mourning.  It was a great big celebration of the persons life with a general party atmosphere.   I was told that was normal and they liked the guy very much and he was well respected.  I found that attitude to be very enlightened and positive.

  6. They talk funny, and they eat spam.  My bf is from Hawaii.
