Devry, Westwood, Everest College/institue/university are becoming overwhelmingly popular. Why? I mean too many to name programs offered are not respected, accept anyone (i mean everyone), or accrediated nationally or reginally. A considerable amount of employers even refuse to hire graduates from these for-profit "colleges." Why?

  1. There is nothing to feel sorry about people who attend Devry.  I attended devry and graduated top of my class, work for Cisco Systems.  Devry is also accredited and you can transfer the credits to other universities.   You see, people don't realize that it does not matter where you go to school to get a good paying job, is how you apply your self in school.

We all know that in IT, experience is what pays and if you have the experience you can get pay what ever you want.  I have a friend who makes over 100k a year and works with USC, UCLA ..etc co workers, some of them make less than her.

I can't say that about westwood, Everest or UOP.  I did not attend those schools.  The degree is shorter, but I think it is smart, figure out how money you loose in a year difference, working vs one more year of school.

  2. I don't know what you have heard but there are statistics that state people who graduate from on-line schools make 1 million more dollars in a life time then conventional school. Also What do you mean not respected? Just because people who go to these schools go on-line and manage their own schedules doesn't mean they are fraud-ed or cheats. Actually more people who go to school on-line are hired as opposed to conventional school. It shows independents, ability to manage time, fast learning, etc. And all of these schools are accreditedd nationally and regionally. All colleges are for profit. I can't think of one that doesn't charge. These schools are popular because they work. They are accredited and they help regular people get degrees to move on to bigger and better things. People are so narrowmined. Why does everyone think conventional school is better? In 10 or 15 yrs everyone will be going on-line and conventional school will be considered fraudulent. Just because you don't agree with online school doesn't mean it is stupid or wrong. Not everything works for everyone. Everyone is different. We all learn different and that is the beauty of online school.

  3. It's because for-profits can spend literally millions upon millions for professionally created marketing campaigns.  Non-profits by comparison have very limited marketing money as the focus is to put the money into the faculty and programs.  Not that they need to anyway, as even low ranked schools get far more applications than from what they can accept.  For-profits only care about the bottom-line to its investors. This means aggressively increasing sales (students in this case) boosts their stock price. So-called enrollment counselors at for-profits are paid on commission, so they are like used car salesmen -- slick talking, putting sugar into your ear, then once you give them your money they give you the middle finger to any inquiries (or more commonly, they have been fired as they missed their quotas).

  4. People go to these schools because they are looking for a short cut to get a degree! I kind of feel bad for them because their degrees are pretty much worthless!

  5. Again, you are wrong here. UOP is accredited and I never had a problem getting a job with UOP on my resume. The school that you attended is not the top reason why you would get hired by an organization. If two people are both applying for the same job and both are exactly the same (this is a dream scenario of course) then the one that went to Stanford may get the job over the UOP graduate.

I do resent your statements because I worked by butt off when i had my thesis project and it was serious work that not everyone produce and to say UOP is joke is to say that my work was for nothing.

  6. Because they want to take the "easy" way out newsflash people; there is no "easy" way to get a degree. I'm going to one of the best colleges on the west coast; it was so hard to get into, I had to really work at it but I want to be a teacher and there is really no shortcut way around it; my school is widely recgonized in this area as being highly credited; because of this I will probably have a job by the time I'm done.

  7. I think because the schools themselves give u such a load of b s if u contact them.
