  1. Many people are self centred and cant see past their own noses. If something doesnt effect them they wont change. They will just keep guzzling water - why oh dear me when I turn on my tap(faucet) the water keeps flowing.  Americans are no different to others around the world. In Australia we have had drought for years (our dams in Victoria are at about 30% capacity) We have just as many people who are self centred and think their beautiful garden is more important than the needs of all in the Nation to have water. People wouldn't self regulate and change. So the State and Federal Governments had to eventually step into regulate the use of water by all people - so for those who dont believe that the drought in America wont effect them because they live int the city or suburbs oh and the water keeps flowing from their taps  - send them to Australia to see what the consequences are.   I will personally give them a tour of shame hrough the suburbs, city and rural areas. Better still you could do this in America - get Oprah to go out to the rural areas and shove it in the face of water wasters as to what is happening.

For those who want to know - this is the consequence of selfish water guzzlers:  We have something called water restrictions. Each State in Australia has water restrictions - from metropolitan to suburban to rural areas. In the city of Melbourne we have Stage 3A water restrictions. Brisbane has stage 4 some rural areas have stage 5.  Watering of lawns has not been allowed for some time. No housing down paving or the pavement(sidewalk)  either

No washing cars unless by using a bucket or a car wash facility which has met particular water saving measures.

The humble garden hose must be fitted with a trigger/gun like nozzle.

Houses with odd street numbers may water garden beds on tues & thurs houses with even numbers may water on mon & wed - there are some days where no watering is allowed at all. Watering is only allowed for a set period of time during set hours.

We are all being asked to fit low water use shower heads (the local water authority gives these away - but you must hand in your high water flow shower head)

We are encouraged to install water tanks to collect rain water when it does eventually rain and to recycle grey water to either flush toilets and/or water gardens. The govt offers subsidies to do this.

Campaigns to educate on water use e.g flushing toilets:

If it is yellow let it mellow if it is brown flush it down. Dob in a water waster (And people do) or Dont be a Wally with water (A wally is someone who is ignorant about the needs of others - wastes etc)

Our local water authority has the right to enter a property to check reports or suspicions of residents who may be watering lawns or watering on days when they are not permitted or breaching other water restrictions.  There are significant penalties.

Watering of gardens may only take place in the early hours of the morning and for a set period of time - the elderly & disabiled may apply for an exemption to water at a later time in the morning - but the time period for watering remains the same.

Community education on having low water use/drought resistant gardens has been taking place for some years - encouraging people from moving away from high water use european style gardens to native australian flora based gardens. We never water our garden - plants in it must survive on natural water fall - needless to say we have native plants.

These are just a few of the things we must do from the top of my head - there are number of other restrictions. The higher the restriction number the more things you are not allowed to do.

  2. Water conservation is the concern of all.  Save water before it runs out.

  3. It is ridiculous isn't it. They all know that they are short water but they pour it freely on the car and the ground.

They will start flinging lawsuits soon towards the Gov't and we will indirectly pay for that too.......

  4. Are you saying that we should let them die of thirst, I hope not.

  5. Welcome to America!  The Melting Pot!

The reality is people will containue to water and refuse to listen to others.  Their neighbors will stand around with their arms crossed, shakeing their heads and giving very crossed expressions.

If there are any special Water warnings out, because the water is low or it's so hot there is concern, you are allowed to report your neighbor for these things.  Most people are unaware of this.  And don't worry,.. everyone in the neighborhood is ticked off.

So don't be mad at an entire City.  Some of them probably did try to even stop the wasteful.  But people can't control everyone all the time.  So now everyone is suffering because of the few that used water excess 24/7.

  6. I know the feeling... while I'm watching my garden die die die from not being able to water it... obeying the rules during the drought... meanwhile, as I drive through town, I'm watching ppl wash their cars, etc... what can you do ?
