  1. The best way to find out is to talk to your living grandparents on both sides.  Also sort through photos to get ideas of where you might have inherited certain features.  It sounds like you have an idea of some of your traits.  It's interesting how gentics work.  If you have a fair skinned relative, yet both your parents are darker, it is possible you got the recessant gene.  It's fascinating how it can pop up like that.  You are mixed yet being raised in an an African American household.  It's not as uncommon as you may think.  But do the homework and talk to the grandparents and look for photos.

  2. You are not your ancestry. You are you, and you are unique, and you are the man. You need not answer to anyone but God and your conscience.

People of mixed heritage are definitely the wave of the future. Consider yourself leading edge.

  3. Tracing your heritage is work, so think about how much you really want to know. If you're willing to do the work people will help you. However finding out who your ancestors were is only part of what you need to know. You must value who you are now otherwise all the information you find won't help how you feel about people calling you names.

As most everyone will tell you, start with what you know.

At the top of a piece of paper in the middle write down your name, date of birth (DOB), place of birth (POB).

Next draw two lines  down from your name, under one line put your mother's name, her date and place of birth, do the same for your father, inbetween them put the date and place of their marriage. Then down from them put your grandparent's information, it will look something like a pyramid. (I tried making a drawing but it didn't work with this format.)www.familysearch.org had forms you can print that will help, family group sheets have space to put information about brothers and sisters.

Ask your relatives for as much information as they can give you. Don't rely on just your grandparents.  If they're not sure have them guess and put a ? after the information. Be sure to ask aunts and uncles too, they might have information your parents and grandparents don't.

Next is to find out if there is real information about your ancestors. There are many websites, so many it can get confusing. If your last name is unusual there may be people out there who have already done research. Google the name and see what comes up.

The website www.rootsweb.com has a lot of free information. You can look up things by your last name, the place some is born and by nationality.

If someone died after the 1930's they will probably be in the Social Security Death Index. That will give you a year of birth and place of death.

In order to find ancestors in the census they have to have been alive in 1930, that's the most recent one you can look at. Find out where your ancestors were living in 1930.  Go to www.censusfinder.com and click on the state you need, it will give you links to find the information. They even have one for native american census.

This will start you out. Once you have some information others can help you, most genealogists are very helpful.

    Good luck!

  4. tell em to call your oreo...or white chocolate

  5. You need to do a geneology chart. Go to ancestors.com

Ask your family lots of questions and try to trace it back as far as you can. It sounds like there are racists in your family.
