CELESTAS LIL SIS HERE (IM ON BIG SISSYS ACCOUNT)

I really wanna go to Japan in a foreign exchange program next year,

but I want to know what Japanese teenages would think of a non-Japanese Gyaru gal? If you don't really know what I am talking about CHECK THE LINKYS!!! I'm not really hardcore with it or anything, just lite brown hair, LITE gyaru make-up && of course I'm pretty hardcore with the style (just like in the links). So could you guys tell me if I'd be made fun of too much if I go there? Serious answers ONLY.

  1. I have no Idea what gyaru is but as a young adult I found that Japanese people seemed very kind and hospitable. Learn their mannerisms before you go.  Their culture was different when I was there from what it is today. They become more westernized every day.

  2. Out of date. lol.

  3. I don't think people would really care, but I can say that it depends on which school you're going to. Some schools will demand that you dye your hair back to your original hair color whether your an exchange student or not. And once again, it depends on the school, but most aren't allowed to wear makeup.

  4. Pretty much anything goes in Tokyo, but the  teens can only get away with dressing like that on weekends. Not at most schools.

  5. You'd get along just fine with the gyaru's; most teenagers think it's cool to have foreign friends, and if you look and act gyaru then the gyaru's will probably be flattered and happy to let you join them.  Just make sure you go to a big city, where there will plenty of gyaru's and foreigners, and avoid the countryside where people can be more conservative.

  6. you might.

but just remember, its your life

you can dress however you want

  7. if you look like those girls you'll be fine, japanese teens think foreign girls are very exotic as well, if you go, have fun.

  8. Do not go to Japan.  They do not really like foreigners.  They have a special name for them (in Japanese) but i don't remember.

  9. I really don't want to disappoint you but....gyaru is out of style. The light brown hair will always be in, but the fashion and make up is out. Last time I was in Shinjuku, Harajuku and Shibuya, I saw none! And this is really recently. Lolitas are out of style also, only saw 1.

Don't worry about being made fun of because Japanese teens are very creative in their fashion, anything goes! If you want to be made fun of, look like a typical American with bermuda shorts lugging around a huge backpack.

  10. Fashion of young Japanese cycle is always short.

Try to see what's going in and out on teenager in Japan through one of popular fashion magazine, Seventeen official web.

As you may understand, Gyaru style is quite outstream now. It seems teenagers now are much decent, conservative and classic recurringly.

There are some different fashion such as gothic-lolita or punk but not main stream.

Those ganguro gyaru wore loosen socks were often seen about 10 years ago in Harajuku or Shibuyabut not now. The boom was over at least in big city.

  11. The japanese girls (most) try to imitate western clothing and style. If you come looking like that, I think you'll be a hit. But don't expect tons of guys to walk up and start flirting with you (atleast during the day). Japanese guys and girls are WAYYY to shy for that. But at night in the city life, I think you'll get alot of attention and compliments.

I say go for it. The japanese teens will too I think.

  12. I dont think you would be made fun of, providing you made friends with/ hung around with those type of people, as most japanese people love foreign girls.

If you were going on an exchange program though, you would prably be put with a host family, and (depending on how open/understanding the family is) you might have trouble fitting in there, as 'normal' japanese familes are quite conservative. I stayed with a japanese host family two years ago and found they were more 'normal' than i was with fashion, and also they were a bit weird about me liking anime..... which just shows you they arent at all like the stereotypes seen in the media, they are in fact just like us, and very westernized.

Gyaru is more popular around shibuya in tokyo, and lots of magazines like 'egg' and cawaii popularise that style.... so maybe try to stay around Shibuya, but I would say be prepared for anything.... going to Japan will shatter you previous expectations of the country, as everybody is different there. Good luck, be prepared for anything, and most importantly be open and flexible! especially in the way you interperate things, this will make you get the most out of your trip!
