People not so sure about attending London Olympics after riots
A recent report released by the research agency, TNS, shows that people from various countries who were willing to attend the London 2012 Olympics are no longer interested in the prospect because of the riots that overtook the city in recent weeks.
The research cites about a quarter of Americans who had previously showed intent to visit London in the coming months will not be making the trip over security concerns in the city. Not only have five percent of visitors from France and 14% from Germany
become indecisive in their plans to frequent the city. Apart from that, another survey also showed that one-third of people have lost confidence in London’s ability to stage the Olympic Games next year without incident.
However, the chairman of Spectra, Wendy Moffatt, gave the following statements upon the matter: “As to the future, we should perhaps remind the media and reporters of the way the Metropolitan Police handled the recent royal wedding, as well as the statistics
for the arrests since the rioting, to reassure ourselves and the outside world of our capability to handle a trouble-free Olympics.”
On the other hand, the director of travel and tourism for TNS UK, Jim Eccleston, shared his views in this manner: “It is unsurprising to see this reaction from potential overseas visitors in the wake of such a significant event...Currently I believe we are
looking at a short term emotional reaction to images in the media. I would expect these figures to decrease significantly as the excitement builds for the Olympics next year.”
The city of London will be hosting the Olympic Games for the third time in its history. Playing host to the prestigious international sporting event next year will make London the first city in the world to have hosted the games for three times. The first
time that London got the honour of welcoming the Olympic Games on its soil was in 1908 while the second occasion occurred in the year 1948.
London will be trying its best to make the Olympic Games a success in the coming year especially in the wake of the recent riots.
