People of Montreal!!!! Can i have your help?!?

My girlfriend and I are going to Montreal for three nights in the beginning of July. I've looked at a lot of information and am trying to decide whether we should stay at the Holiday Inn Montreal-Midtown on Sherbrooke or the Holiday Inn Select Centre Ville Downtown on the corner of Vigars Ave and St. Urbain St? We are each 20 years old and going for primarily parties/clubs/nightlife.

Also, I'm trying to decide if I should drive (from upstate ny) or just take a bus or train. It would be significantly longer and more expensive to not take a car, but I heard driving is bad and if I keep the car at either hotel it'll be about $20/day. Would I get any use of having a car while I'm there or would it be way easier for me to take the metro? What would you recommend I do, drive or not? Thanks so much for any help

  1. dont go to montreal. go to toronto--the people are a lot nicer.  i dont know montreal that well but you dont need a car while you are there.  everyone walks

  2. Take the one on Sherbrooke, it is pretty central.  As for driving, if you are open to the train, then yes, go for the train ride and you will save gas, effort and hassle in traffic, because the traffic is also heavy in Montreal.

  3. From what you have said:

    "Going for primarily parties/clubs"

Stay at the one on Sherbrook.  But, I should tell you that Montreal downtown is pretty compact, things are happening all over, and also that St. Urbain St. location is not far from

Sherbrook either, but this one is a lot more Central.

If you are not going to spend most of your time in Montreal, forget about a car, take the train, the station on St. Catherine, is only 15 minutes walk to the Hotel, and there is Metro right there that will take you right a few step from the hotel in no time.

Metro is fantastic over there, and there is no need for a car.

If you are going there before July 06, which is the time of the Jazz festival, I would make sure that I already have a place for the night.  And I really mean this.

    Enjoy it.

  4. It really makes me laugh that people think that Montreal is so unfriendly. Most I'm sure have never been here.

I would suggest either the one or Sherebrooke or the Select Centre-ville. Downtown in a very tight interwoven area, so you should have no problems getting around, using the metro, buses, cabs, walking, etc. I will warn you that if you plan on being out late, as in after 1 am, the metro usually is done running around then, so you will have to rely on the night bus or a cab.

You can check out the stm.info site, which will give you a map of the metro stations and bus routes, and has a trip advisor that can tell you the best/quickest way to get places, based on your origin and destination.

Honestly if its more expensive to not take the car, then bring it. There are a lot of things around the island you may want to see, and it would be nice to have the car to get there. If you plan to just stick to the core downtown area then you won't need it though. Just factor in extra money for cab fare/bus passes.

Good luck and have fun in our beautiful city!
